Defined as "disease of the supporting structures of the teeth," the term is more loosely applied to cover oral infections of the mouth and gingiva thus leading to severe tartar and plaque build-up and ultimately dental disease. Since dogs and cats are not known for their good brushing habits, tartar builds up rapidly on their teeth and beneath their gums. Over time, the gums become reddened and inflamed. The resulting infection leads to recession of the gums and root exposure. This eventually results in tooth loss. So how can all this be prevented? Early detection and prevention is the key! First, always have your pet checked out by a veterinary professional. After a thorough oral examination, your veterinarian may recommend various options. | ||
